Published on January 21, 2005 By Carl Rollyson In Welcome
I've just published READING BIOGRAPHY, a collection of my columns on biography for The New York Sun. The book is available from www.iuniverse.com, bn.com, and amazon.com. I'm interested in hearing from readers and writers of biography. What do you like about the genre? What you don't like? What problems or pleasures do you have in reading or writing biographies.

I know the assignment on the biographical essay was mentioned in class. I was wondering if we can review in class in more detail regarding the style and components of a well written biographical essay. Also, how much time do we have to write this draft?

What is needed in order to make my biographical essay less boring? Also, can I use sources that I found from the internet in the bibliography?

I think the biographical essay on Marie Curie will be very challenging to compose because there was so much learnt about Marie over the pass month. It will be difficult to decide which topics to include in the essay and which ones to disregard. Nevertheless I do believe if enough time is spent on choosing the most relevant topics about the subject everyone will be able to tackle the essay succesfully.

I've got the general idea of how to compose the essay. But I'm having trouble usage of dialogues. Should we introduce direct speech or quotations? I can vaguely picture to myself an essay with direct speech.

I like the end of the documentary film. It is so emotional. People recapitulated Lillian Hellman's interests and peculiarities not her achievements. It shows that she gives people so deep impression not only in her success but also in her life. "She is not an important person but she is great."

One of the interesting ways of presenting biography is listening to eyewitness's quotes on a subject. And so, according to spectator's opinion Lillian Hellman loved being dramatic and angry, enjoed provoking conflicts. It energised her and kept her alive. On the other hand, as we've learned from Mr. Rollyson's essay, "Hellman did not deign to reply to the charges" made by McCarthy concerning Lillian's libel about some issues in her memoir. Interesting.

Lillian Hellman's documentary was insightful, it gave a picture of Lillian that the book leaves out. We got to hear the opinions of people knew her, and see the expressions on their faces as they showed us her life. I don't understand why Ms. McCarty dragged Lillians name through the dirt. I was upset. I kept asking myself:
Why Ms. McCarthy called Lillian Hellman a liar? Did she know Lillian Hellman personally?

I learned what does Lillian Hellman looks like and what others think of her in the documentary. She likes to social and talk a lot. She likes to talk anything she wants without any hesitation. For example, she says the word "chink and nigga" without thinking before she says it.

I learned more about Hellman the individual from the video than from the biographical essay. I was immersed in her story more easily as I listened to the interviews and watched her for real.
