Published on January 21, 2005 By Carl Rollyson In Welcome
I've just published READING BIOGRAPHY, a collection of my columns on biography for The New York Sun. The book is available from www.iuniverse.com, bn.com, and amazon.com. I'm interested in hearing from readers and writers of biography. What do you like about the genre? What you don't like? What problems or pleasures do you have in reading or writing biographies.

After reading the essay on Lilian Helman it straight away led me to think of Plutarch. The reason for this is-- it was recovered that Lilian lost her reputation when she was accused of telling lies in her writing. I immediately remembered Plutarch because he too was accused of getting his facts wrong. But infact he did not loose his reputation. I was wondering why that was so? Was it because of the difference in their occupation? Was it because Plutarch had far outweighed Lilian in value?

i'm glad were able to read the essay on Lilian Helman and watch the movie because even though its based on the same info the movie (with interviews, etc.) gives a little more insight on her life.

How to write a good conclusion that would not be like the repetition of the introduction?

I'm seeking for help. Can anyone explain to me the difference between a book review and an analytical research paper? What if one attempts to write with their own opinion without using phrases like : I believe, I suggest, I think. Would the composition turn out to sound like an analytical paper?

I need to find out how to title the book review. I have a dillema. I could either title it based on the content of the book I read or I could title it based on the content of the review I wrote. I am leaning towards the latter.

Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn is one of the top artists of the world painting. His art is filled with unusual liveliness and deep human images. Rembrandt's works precisely are portraitures, biblical and mythological scenes which resemble psychological tales about human feelings and relationships. I strongly recommend you to take a look at one of his most famed creations " Return of the Prodigal Son ". It shows regret, sorrow, and contrition.

"The Anatomy Lecture of Dr Nicolaes Tulp" was painted by Rembrandt van Rijn during the Baroque epoch in 1632. The picture still impresses us today by the dramatic concentration of the figures on Tulp's demonstration of the dissection of a forearm. The corpse is the focus of the composition, by its intense brightness. From here, the eye of the spectator is led to the illuminated heads of the listeners, whose expressions and attitudes reflect different degrees of attention.

I'm having trouble putting together a first draft for my biographical essay. Is there any particular format ?

Personnally i think if Lilian Helman had kept her child she might not have had some of the problems she had in her later life with drinking. I think that if a child was present she might have better been able to contain herself . . . or who know she might have jus taken the child down with her.

I think that a composition is almost the same as a structure, which is absolutely necessary in writing essays or any other papers. It reveals how well you can organize your ideas.

Can you clearly tell the class when our final book review due date is ?
More than that, you told us that we have one more chance for editting our book review. When will you give that back to us? All these situation make me get confused. Please clarify this.

I found two definitions of the composition:
1...an arrangement of artistic parts so as to form a unified whole.
2...combining the distinct parts or elements to form a whole.
I think that the art to put thoughts (or images) together is very important. It allows the reader to get the clearer understanding of the work.
